Carpathian Forest Restoration

Carpathian Forest Restoration

Our flagship project focuses on rehabilitating over 5,000 hectares of forest land in the Carpathian Mountains. Through strategic reforestation efforts, we've successfully planted 120,000 native trees in areas devastated by illegal logging. The initiative involves local communities in the planting process, providing sustainable employment while restoring vital wildlife habitats. By 2026, we aim to increase forest coverage by an additional 20%, creating interconnected wildlife corridors for endangered species like the European brown bear and Eurasian lynx.

Danube Delta Conservation

Danube Delta Conservation

The Danube Delta, Europe's second-largest wetland ecosystem, faces numerous threats from pollution and unsustainable tourism. Our conservation initiative works with local fishermen communities to establish sustainable fishing practices while monitoring water quality across 100 key locations. We've successfully reduced pollution levels by 35% through community-led cleanup campaigns and educational programs. Our research team has documented increased populations of rare bird species, including the Dalmatian pelican, demonstrating the ecosystem's gradual recovery.

Transylvanian Meadow Biodiversity

Transylvanian Meadow Biodiversity

The traditional hay meadows of Transylvania contain some of Europe's richest botanical diversity, supporting over 600 plant species per hectare. Our program works with local farmers to maintain traditional mowing practices that preserve this remarkable biodiversity while creating sustainable income through eco-tourism. We've documented 45 rare orchid species across the project area and developed a seed bank to protect genetic diversity for future restoration projects. Our 2026 goal includes expanding protection to an additional 1,500 hectares of these threatened habitats.

Our Journey

The evolution of Benzolebflatten from concept to conservation leader

2019

Founded as a small collective of environmental scientists and local naturalists concerned about the increasing threats to Romania's natural landscapes. Initial focus on documenting ecological changes in the Carpathian Mountains through scientific research and community engagement. Established first partnerships with three rural communities to develop sustainable tourism practices.

2021

Secured first major grant from European Conservation Fund, enabling expansion to a team of 12 full-time conservationists. Launched pilot reforestation project covering 500 hectares of degraded forest land. Developed educational curriculum now used in 25 Romanian schools, reaching over 3,000 students annually with hands-on ecological education.

2023

Recognized with National Environmental Excellence Award for innovative community-based conservation approaches. Expanded operations to encompass all major Romanian ecosystems, from mountain forests to coastal wetlands. Established research partnerships with universities in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Vienna to monitor biodiversity indicators across project sites.

2024-Present

Currently managing 12 major conservation initiatives across Romania with a team of 45 specialists. Developing comprehensive strategy for 2026 initiatives, including the launch of Romania's first community-owned nature reserve. Expanding international partnerships to create cross-border conservation corridors with neighboring countries, ensuring wildlife connectivity throughout the Carpathian region.

Join us in celebrating and protecting Romania's natural heritage

Forest Festival
May 15-17, 2026

Carpathian Forest Festival

Our annual celebration bringing together conservationists, local communities, and visitors to experience the wonders of Romania's ancient forests. The three-day event features guided nature walks, wildlife photography workshops, traditional ecological knowledge demonstrations, and evening concerts with local musicians. All proceeds directly fund our forest restoration initiatives, making this both a cultural celebration and a practical conservation effort.

Stories from those who have joined our eco initiatives

Environmental Researcher
"As a researcher from Oxford University, my time with Benzolebflatten's biodiversity monitoring program provided invaluable data for my studies on European butterfly migrations. The team's methodical approach to citizen science has created one of the most comprehensive ecological datasets in Eastern Europe. Beyond the scientific value, their deep connection with local communities demonstrates how conservation can enhance rural livelihoods rather than competing with them."

Environmental Researcher, Oxford University

Local Farmer
"For three generations, my family has farmed these meadows using traditional methods. When industrial agriculture threatened our way of life, Benzolebflatten helped us see that our traditional practices weren't outdated—they were valuable for conservation. Through their program, I now earn more from sustainable farming and hosting eco-tourists than I ever could from intensive agriculture. My grandchildren now see a future here in our village."

Local Farmer, Brasov County

Eco Tourist
"Our two-week eco-tour through Romania's wild landscapes was transformative. Unlike typical tourist experiences, Benzolebflatten connected us with authentic rural communities and untouched natural environments. We helped track wolf populations, participated in a traditional hay-making festival, and stayed in beautifully restored heritage houses. The trip perfectly balanced adventure, education, and genuine cultural exchange—all while knowing our visit supported conservation."

Our Conservation Approach

Science-based methods with community at the center

Conservation Methodology Diagram

1. Scientific Baseline Assessment

Every project begins with comprehensive ecological surveys to document current biodiversity, identify threatened species, and understand ecosystem functions. Our team of researchers uses cutting-edge techniques including environmental DNA analysis, remote sensing, and traditional field surveys to establish detailed baseline data against which we can measure future progress. This scientific foundation ensures our interventions address the most critical ecological needs.

2. Community Engagement

We recognize that lasting conservation requires local support and leadership. Our community engagement process involves extensive consultations with village councils, farmers' associations, and regional authorities to understand local priorities and concerns. We co-design projects that align ecological goals with community needs, creating initiatives that generate sustainable livelihoods while protecting natural resources. This collaborative approach has resulted in 87% community participation rates across our project areas.

3. Adaptive Implementation

Conservation work takes place in complex social-ecological systems that require flexibility. Our adaptive management framework includes quarterly monitoring, annual evaluation cycles, and a willingness to modify approaches based on emerging evidence. This process allows us to respond to changing conditions—whether ecological shifts due to climate change or evolving economic realities in rural communities—ensuring our work remains effective and relevant over time.

4. Knowledge Sharing

We are committed to transparency and open science principles. All our research findings, monitoring data, and evaluation reports are published in open-access formats and presented in accessible language for both scientific and general audiences. We host regular knowledge exchange workshops with other conservation organizations across Eastern Europe, contributing to a growing community of practice around sustainable landscape management in the region.
